WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR OFF SEASON

THE OFF-SEASON
Off season is the season after the rain has gone for the year.  It varies across different nations, and regions.  For Nigeria,  the off season starts from October a d ends in March on the average.

Exactly what can farmers do in the off-season?

It depends on what kind of farm you have. But regardless of the type of farm, the major off season works are as follows:

1. Equipment maintenance.
Farmers need to do maintenance on their equipment to get it ready for planting in a few months. Your equipment has been used long hours over just a few weeks, so it needs a little extra TLC to keep it running in good shape.

2. Forward plan
You may want to do a lot of planning for next year. Making sure that you have a plan for which type of crop go into which field, which hybrids or varieties are going into which field, and that each field is prepared ahead.

3. Increase attention given to your animal farm.
If a farmer have animals, there is no off-season. The animals always need to be cared for with plenty of food and fresh water. Dairy cows need to be milked every day. There are always new groups of your day-old chick or turkeys coming in that need to be cared for.

4. For the love of crop farming......
However,  if you are the Plant lover who wishes to continue in the line of crops,  you may want to look in the direction of irrigation farming.  Could be mini or big irrigation system,  manual or automated, by the riverside or at your backyard with your borehole,  the key thing is to ensure your crop have steady water supply in place of the rain.
You may wish to ask around from the off season irrigation farmers how much money they make from cocorus  (ewedu), Amaranthus,  ugwu and other forms of vegetables.

Conclusion
Come what may,  rain or no rain,  a farmer should always be on-season. It is easier if you are an integrated farmer,  you just shift your focus to the animals, while you plan for the next cropping  season. However  for a non integrated farmer,  you may want to start looking in the direction of irrigation farming especially vegetables. It could  be few beds of vegetables,  could be several hectares,  your pocket and choice dictates.

THE PROS AND CONS OF THOROUGH LAND PREPARATION.

Recently a client engaged me to set up her 7 hectares cassava  farm, she was clear about what she wanted and what she does not want. “I already have a cleared land, all I need from you is just technical back up, to get me a good variety of cassava, fix on the soil , bring in fertilizer and help me do routine check up till it is ready for harvest”.  It wasn’t my 1st time a client will  be describing an 8-12 months job in just 8-12 minutes, ofcourse it is always a pleasure listening to clients farm with mouth! On what she does not want she said “I have planted maize this year on the same land and I suffered a great loss, so poor, I could not even recouped half of the money spent talk more of profit, I felt so discouraged.” I said to myself, “familiar story”, often people have garbaged in to agriculture like that and hit their head hard on a rock. It can be so painful.  We proceeded to her “cleared” land and I got the shock of my life. It was nearly as worst ...

HOW AGRIBUSINESS DIFFERS FROM THE CONVENTIONAL BUSINESS

Agribusiness is the business of agricultural production, an industry engaged in the producing operations of a farm, the manufacture and distribution of farm equipment and supplies, and the processing, storage, and distribution of farm commodities. The term was coined in 1957 by Goldberg and Davis. It includes agrichemicals, breeding , crop production ( farming and contract farming ), distribution, farm machinery ,processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system. Examples of Agribusiness Companies Deere & Company, which makes John Deere equipment, may be one of the best-known examples of a classic agribusiness company. The firm doesn't own farms or produce food products, but nearly every farmer owns a John Deere tractor, baler or some other piece of the quintessential green and gold farm equipment. Monsanto Company, which manufacture...

In China, deserts are being turned to farm lands!

A team of researchers in chongqing Jiaotong University in  China has found a way to turn desert into forests, they created a paste from natural materials found in plant, this paste when mixed with sand, turns it to a soil suitable for  crop growth. With the paste, the sand has been empowered with qualities of soil; water, air and nutrient retention.   With this breakthrough, it took just six months to transform 200 hectares of a chinese desert into a land rich with different type of crops. It is our hope that some day in Nigeria, our research will be developmental and get to this level of solving problems, for the sake of all of us.
